grid lock

Being able to read a map or tell someone where you are can be a matter of life and death. Supposing you break your leg on a mountain. It is much easier to give someone the number of the square you are lying in rather than a vague description of rocks, sheep and the stream that is filling your wellies!

The number of the map square is called the grid reference because it refers to the square of a grid printed over the map.
